Demographic changes are nowadays one of the biggest challenges facing societies and although they are mainly the result of processes that have been taking place for many years, their effects – both economic and social – are already felt. Currently observed trends in the field of factors affecting the size and structure of the population, such as: a decrease in fertility, an increase in life expectancy, the creation and breakdown of families, movement of population, determine the labour market, education, health care, and also affect the nature of consumption or the social security market. It can be concluded that along with the progressing demographic changes, the areas of social and economic life that they condition will expand.

The Statistical Office in Warszawa has prepared the next edition of the publication “Children in Mazowieckie Voivodship” using data coming from statistical surveys as well as from administrative sources. The information presented in graphical form with short analytical comments concern: demographic phenomena, the child’s place in the family and beyond, supporting families with dependent children, social care, health and medical care, education and upbringing, culture and leisure, as well as threats to health and life. In order to show the diversity within the region, selected data were presented at the level of urban areas, rural areas and powiats. The publication ends with a comparison of Mazovia with other voivodships in the country, as illustrated by numerous charts.

The data presented in the Report relate to 2020 or the last available year. In order to illustrate changes over time, some issues are presented in a multi-year retrospective. For most topics, the presentation of phenomena dates back to 2010. The population projection was presented in the horizon until 2030. Selected data were compared to the average values for the country. In this year's edition of the study, in selected sections, comments were made on new information introduced into the surveys of official statistics in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Generation of young adults living with their parents in Poland

The Statistical Office in Warszawa, using the experience of the Centre for Administrative Data Sources and the Mazovian Centre for Regional Surveys, has prepared an experimental work on the generation of young Polish adults living with parents. The skillful use of administrative data in conjunction with innovative methods for determining families and identifying populations, developed in the Demographic Surveys Department of the Statistics Poland, gave surprising results. We have managed to create a very detailed picture of a certain segment of the population of the country's inhabitants in the scale of gminas and individual years. So far, studies by sociologists and statisticians have been based solely on the representative method. Administrative sources made it possible to draw an experimental portrait of the entire generation of young adults living with parents in Poland.

This regulation is the result of the revision of the Classification of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), under which modifications were made to the statistical units of 9 EU Member States.

In 2018, 100 years have passed since the establishment of the Central Statistical Office. On this occasion, the Statistical Office in Warsaw prepared the “Statistical Atlas of Mazowieckie Voivodship” presenting the spatial diversity of social and economic phenomena in the region. The Mazovia is considered one of the most internally diversified voivodships in Poland. This results from the dominating position of Warsaw and dynamically developing metropolitan area surrounded by areas struggling with the problems of depopulation, unemployment and low entrepreneurship.

Portrait of a migrant. Internal migration in subregional cities in Mazowieckie voivodship in 2005-2015

There are five subregional centres in Mazowieckie voivodship: Ciechanów, Ostrołęka, Płock, Radom and Siedlce. These cities, until the end of 1998, were the capitals of the voivodships, and after the administrative reform from January 1, 1999 they gained the status of cities with powiat rights. The exception is Ciechanów, which gained the status of urban gmina. Since 1999, majority of these cities recorded a population decrease mainly due to migration. One of the reasons for population decline was the suburbanisation process and the outflow of population to the suburban area.

Due to their significance, urban areas are in the centre of attention of both spatial policy of the country, defined in the Conception of Spatial Development of the Country 2030, and regional policy, defined in the National Strategy of Regional Development 2010‐2020.

Ranking of Warsaw districts according to the attractiveness of living conditions

The positive and negative opinions of the inhabitants and regular visitors of the district are the source of stereotypes – labels attached to particular districts. Hence, some districts are associated with endless traffic jams and uncomfortable commuting or large share of industrial areas, others are considered only dormitory towns for those working in the city centre. However, because of the dynamic development in the recent years, some of the common images may have little in common with the reality. Therefore, to respond to the stereotypical perception of Warsaw’s districts, this ranking of their attractiveness according to living conditions has been prepared.

Warsaw as compared with selected European capital cities

Presented data have been compiled on the basis of the information obtained from the European Statistical Offices and covers the set of data concerning 22 capital cities. The scope of information covers issues related to population, health, dwellings, public safety, culture and tourism. However, methodological differences in statistics of countries causes that the data presented in folder are not always strictly comparable.
