Demographic changes are nowadays one of the biggest challenges facing developing societies and although they are mainly the result of processes that have been taking place for many years, their effects – both economic and social – are now beginning to be felt now. The observed trends in the field of factors affecting the size and structure of the population, such as: a decrease in fertility, an increase in life expectancy, the creation and breakdown of families, movement of population, determine the labour market, education, health care, and also affect the nature of consumption or the social security market. It can be concluded that along with the progressing demographic changes, the areas of social and economic life that they condition will expand.

Due to the significant role of statistics in supporting the activities of all entities to alleviate the negative effects of demographic changes in Mazovia, the Statistical Office in Warszawa prepared the third edition of the publication “Demographic situation of Mazowieckie Voivodship”, which is a continuation of the publication “Population, vital statistics and migration in Mazowieckie Voivodship” published for 18 years and enjoying a great interest of a wide audience.

This publication contains a number of information about the size and structure of the population in 2010––2021 and demographic phenomena such as: marriages, separations, divorces, births, deaths, migrations in the years 2000–2021. In order to present regional diversity, selected information was analysed in terms of urban areas, rural areas, powiats and gminas. The analytical text of the study was enriched with tables and a graphic presentation in the form of maps and charts.

Data on size and structure of population and all demographic rates for 2021 have been compiled on the basis of the results of the National Population and Housing Census as of 31 March 2021. Moreover, data from this scope for 2020 have been verified taking into account the results of the National Population and Housing Census 2021. For this year, the population balance and demographic rates have been changed.

In addition to the analytical part, the publication includes a tabular part, which contains a wide range of data useful for creating extended analyses. A wider range of demographic data is available on the Statistics Poland website https://www.stat.gov.pl/en/, in the Local Data Bank tab and in the Databases tab (among others in the Demographics database and within the SWAiD Analytical Platform – Knowledge Bases).
